Greetings from the Cockman Family Bluegrass Gospel Group.  I’m sitting here thinking about Earl Scruggs and his wonderful legacy.  He was a great person and a legend to all bluegrass banjo pickers.  His home town is only about an hour from where we live.  His special style of banjo picking has certainly influenced our Family.  Earl Scruggs passed away yesterday.

Our youngest son, Ben, traveled to Hartsville, South Carolina to the Reno Fest, last weekend and competed in the South Carolina, guitar, flat picking championship.  He won first place and received a new handmade guitar build by Gerald Anderson who has worked with Wayne Henderson for over 28 years.  The head stock reads, “Reno Fest 2012.”  That evening Ben was invited to perform with the 4 Virginia Luthiers on stage.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ryfp_n-fqs Ben’s older brother, Billy, won the South Carolina Banjo Championship at Reno Fest for 2010 as well as the North Carolina Banjo Championship that year also.

Don’t forget April 14th.  The Cockman Family will film as part of the PBS, “Song of the Mountains” at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia, at 7 pm.  Others to perform that evening are, Sierra Hull, Roni Stoneman and Lou Reid.  http://songofthemountains.org/new/  We would love to see you there!

This Saturday evening, March 31st at 7 pm, we will be in concert at A.L. Brown High School as part of a special benefit for the Rowan County Law Enforcement.  The school is located at 415 East 1st Street, Kannapolis, NC.  There will be several other gospel groups to perform as well.
